The Belgian government, led by Prime Minister Bart De Wever, is considering extending the lifespan of nuclear reactors following the energy crisis caused by Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Belgium is negotiating with the French company Engie to take over the nuclear fleet, suspending the dismantling activities of the reactors.

Preliminary discussions aim for an agreement by October, without clear financial details, but with the goal of ensuring a financially neutral transition. Belgium has already decided to extend the lifespan of two reactors until 2035 and is analyzing options for five more. In the context of a European return to nuclear energy, Belgium joins other countries that are also extending their nuclear fleets, while the European Commission acknowledges past strategic mistakes related to the abandonment of nuclear energy.
