Members of the European Parliament from the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) have submitted an official complaint to the European Commission and the European Council, emphasizing that the signing of the EU–MERCOSUR Agreement, scheduled to take place soon in Paraguay, cannot occur without an adequate legal mandate. According to the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union, a formal decision from the Council of the European Union is required, adopted in the context of a legal meeting. AUR asserts that a simple COREPER II meeting cannot replace this essential stage, having only a technical role.

Members of the AUR emphasize that, without a decision from the EU Council, Ursula von der Leyen does not have the legal right to sign the agreement, and such an action would severely violate European procedures. AUR proposes the convening of an emergency meeting of the EU Council, in which a Romanian minister could sign the agreement, thus highlighting the actual vote of the representatives of the Romanian government on an agreement with a major impact on farmers and the national economy.
