In Italy, drivers traveling on certain highways must be aware of the new digital toll system, Free Flow, which eliminates traditional barriers. This system operates through portals equipped with cameras and sensors that identify the license plate number and calculate the toll based on the route.
Those who do not have a Telepass device or another electronic payment service must pay the toll within 15 days after passing through the toll area. If they do not do so, they risk fines of up to 344 euros, in addition to the outstanding toll.
The system is in the process of being expanded to various highways, and drivers must be attentive to the payment methods. They should also be cautious of potential fraud attempts that may arise with the digitalization of tolls. A good piece of news is that, starting from June 1, 2026, it will be possible to request a refund of the highway toll in case of delays caused by construction work.
