At least 30 Ukrainians have died trying to escape compulsory military service, many drowning in rivers on the borders with Hungary and Romania.

Many Ukrainians tried to flee the country to avoid mobilization, with some disappearing into the mountainous border areas. A man was found dead in the Tisa river by Romanian border guards, the 30th known victim. Ukraine's new laws have lowered the recruitment age and increased fines for those who do not comply.
