A 31-year-old German man has admitted to founding and running Archetyp Market, considered by investigators to have been the largest darknet drug market before its closure in mid-2025. The platform reportedly had approximately 600,000 customers worldwide and generated around €330 million in revenue.
According to German prosecutors, the defendant allegedly earned approximately €20 million from operating the site, which he is said to have run together with several moderators. Archetyp Market was founded in November 2020, and its server infrastructure was located in the Netherlands.
The platform was allegedly used to trade 3.2 million pills and 2.2 million tablets, as well as 326 liters of drugs. The substances reportedly sold included cocaine, heroin, crystal methamphetamine, fentanyl and crack cocaine, as well as cannabis-based products, medicines and performance-enhancing substances.
The man was arrested in Barcelona in June last year by Spanish special forces. Searches and arrests subsequently took place in Germany and other countries. He faces between five and 15 years in prison for drug trafficking as part of a criminal organization. His admission of guilt may be considered a mitigating circumstance, and the Frankfurt Regional Court is expected to hand down its sentence in October.
