Gloria Steinem, a symbol of the feminist movement in the US, has died at the age of 92

Gloria Steinem, a journalist, writer and one of the best-known feminist activists in the United States, has died at the age of 92 at her home in New York. Her death was announced by her foundation, which said that Steinem “died peacefully,” surrounded by people close to her.

Steinem began her journalism career in New York in the 1970s and quickly became one of the leading voices of the women’s rights movement. More than 50 years ago, she co-founded the Women’s Action Alliance, an organization created to combat sexism.

She later co-founded Ms. magazine, one of the first American publications devoted primarily to women’s issues, beyond traditional themes related to homemaking and beauty standards.
