According to the European Union Agency for Asylum, asylum applications have significantly decreased in the first six months of 2025, by 23% compared to the previous year. This reduction is mainly attributed to the collapse of Bashar al-Assad's regime in Syria, which has led to a drastic decrease in the number of Syrians seeking asylum. France recorded the most applications, followed by Spain and Germany, with requests coming from Ukraine, Afghanistan, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Approximately 4.3 million Ukrainians are benefiting from temporary protection in the EU.
