According to Eurostat data, as of May 31, the European Union hosts 4.38 million Ukrainian refugees under temporary protection, an increase of 0.2% compared to the previous month. Germany hosts the most beneficiaries, with 1,283,270 people, followed by Poland with 967,505 and Spain with 267,400. In 22 out of 26 member states, the number of beneficiaries has increased, with the largest increases recorded in Italy, Germany, and Spain.

Almost 98.5% of beneficiaries are Ukrainian citizens, and their structure shows that 43.4% are adult women, 26.8% are adult men, and 29.8% are minors. Romania, although not among the states with the largest refugee communities, remains a gateway for people fleeing Ukraine, continuing to provide temporary protection. The temporary protection mechanism, activated in March 2022, has been extended until March 2027, highlighting the significant effort of European states in managing this humanitarian crisis.
