Since the beginning of Russia's large-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, 116 journalists have been killed, and 26 remain in captivity, according to the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine, which marked the Day for the End of Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists. Russian forces have violated international humanitarian law, including the Geneva Conventions, by killing and capturing journalists. Of those killed, 18 died while fulfilling their professional duties. The National Committee of Ukraine for Cooperation with UNESCO condemned the illegal detentions and violence against journalists, calling on the international community to respond to Russia's systematic crimes. Recently, a drone attack led to the death of journalist Olena Hramova and cameraman Yevhen Karmazin. In total, Russia has committed 848 crimes against journalists and the media in Ukraine during the invasion.
