According to the Informat.ro - INSCOP Research BAROMETER conducted between May 26-30, 2025, almost half of Romanians do not know what happened 35 years ago, during the events of June 13-15, 1990.

BAROMETER Informat.ro - INSCOP Research is a monthly opinion poll conducted by INSCOP Research commissioned by the news platform Informat.ro in partnership with the think-tank Strategic Thinking Group.

The Informat.ro - INSCOP ResearchBAROMETER aims to bring to public attention topics of interest to stimulate national conversations on various topics and public policies essential for Romania's present and future based on the opinion of Romanians in partnership with prestigious think tanks and academic institutions. It is an approach through which we aim to contribute to the consolidation of democracy through the use of scientific and credible tools that bring the voice of citizens to the forefront of public debate.

Methodology: Data was collected between May 26-30, 2025. Research method: questionnaire interview. Data were collected using the CATI method (telephone interviews), the simple stratified sample size was 1150 persons, representative by significant socio-demographic categories (sex, age, occupation) for the non-institutionalized population of Romania, aged 18 years and over. The maximum permissible error of the data is ± 2.9%, at a confidence level of 95%.

Remus Ștefureac - Director INSCOP Research: "One of the events in Romania's recent history that deeply marked our democratic regime is known by only slightly more than half of Romanians. Moreover, there are significant differences in knowledge across different population categories. More than 70% of PNL voters and more than 60% of PSD and USR voters declare that they know what happened on June 13-15, 1990, while 60% of AUR voters declare that they do not know what happened 35 years ago. Also, 76% of 18-29 year olds say they don't know what happened on June 13-15. On the other hand, 68% of AUR voters and 64% of 18-29 year olds say that if their rights and freedoms were threatened, they would constantly participate in street protests until the threats disappeared. In contrast, only 30% of PSD voters say they would participate in such protests. In relation to the total population, almost 56% say they would participate in protests because this is the only way to defend rights and freedoms. The action dimension of defending rights and freedoms through street protests seems to be more rooted in perceptions of the present, with motivations stemming from knowledge of relevant events in recent history being more fragile. These data show once again the need to strengthen education on recent history as a relevant element for strengthening democratic culture and a society resilient to aggressions, which question the very foundations of our democratic regime."

Events of June 13-15, 1990

54.1% of respondents say they know what happened during the events of June 13-15, 1990, while 45.7% answer in the negative. 0.2% do not answer.

Significantly higher proportions than the population average say they know what happened during the events of June 13-15, 1990: PNL (71%), PSD (63%), USR (62%) voters, men (64%), people aged 45-59 (67%) and over 60 (72%) , those with higher education (72%) and residents of large urban areas (over 60%). They say that they do not know what happened 35 years ago on June 13-15 in higher proportions than the population average in particular: AUR voters (60%), 18-29 year olds (76%) and those aged 30-44 (62%), those with primary education (60%) and rural dwellers (52%).

Protest to defend rights and freedoms

Asked if, if their rights and freedoms were threatened, they would constantly participate in street protests until these threats disappeared, 55.8% answer "Yes, because this is the only way to defend rights and freedoms". 26.8% choose the option "No, because this is not the only way rights and freedoms can be defended". 16.5% say they have not formed an opinion and 0.9% do not answer.

They answer "Yes, because this is the only way rights and freedoms can be defended" in higher proportions than the population average: AUR voters (68%), young people under 30 (63%) and people with primary education (65%). They choose the "No, because this is not the way to defend rights and freedoms" option in particular : PSD voters (52%), people over 60 (42%), people with an average education (32%) and people living in small towns (32%).
