A study conducted by Queen Mary University of London highlighted a significant decrease in deaths caused by cervical cancer, thanks to the vaccination of school-aged girls starting in 2008.
According to research published in The Lancet, approximately 200 lives have been saved in England due to the vaccine. Between 2020 and 2024, no deaths from cervical cancer were recorded among women aged 20 to 24, a first in the last five years.
The study showed an 80% reduction in deaths among women in this age group between 2015 and 2019. The HPV vaccine, usually administered in the 8th grade, protects against cervical cancer, genital warts, and cancers of the head and neck. However, experts are concerned about the declining vaccination rate, emphasizing the importance of public health programs in cancer prevention.
HPV vaccination has been implemented in 100 countries as part of WHO's efforts to eliminate cervical cancer.
