The Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) has announced that it will 'urgently accelerate' the development of three experimental vaccines against the Bundibugyo virus, which is causing the current Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda. CEPI will invest 50 million dollars in Moderna's candidate vaccine, which uses mRNA technology, and will support the University of Oxford and the Serum Institute of India with up to 8.6 million dollars for clinical trials.
WHO has identified these vaccines as the most promising in the fight against Ebola. The current outbreak has caused at least 282 confirmed cases, and CEPI emphasizes the importance of rapidly developing vaccines to control the spread of the virus. While vaccines are in development, WHO continues to prioritize traditional epidemic control measures.
