Security in the Black Sea: Romania at the center of coverage
Maritime incidents near the coasts of Romania and Bulgaria constitute the main geopolitical dossier of the week under review. The subject extends beyond the press of the littoral states: it appears in publications from Greece, Germany, Austria, Spain, and the Netherlands. Romania is presented simultaneously as a state exposed to the spread of the risks of the war in Ukraine and as a participant in building an allied response.
In Austria, ORF reported on October 15 about the fire that broke out on a chemical tanker near Sulina. The report cites Romanian maritime authorities and mentions four sailors rescued and eight missing. The report retains the caveat regarding the cause: the cited authority could neither confirm nor rule out a collision with a drone. ORF places the incident in the context of other maritime episodes near Romania and Bulgaria.
In Germany, ntv follows the fire aboard the vessel “Yara J,” flying the Comoros flag, and the statements of Defense Minister Radu Miruță. The publication states that the crew extinguished the fire before rescuers arrived and that a possible drone strike was under investigation. The emphasis is on the seriousness of an incident occurring in Romanian territorial waters, but also on the limits of the information confirmed at the time of publication.
In Greece, Naftemporiki links the incident involving a tanker flying the San Marino flag to Romanian-Bulgarian discussions regarding consultations within NATO and the protection of navigation. The publication presents information subsequent to that in the initial reports about the fire, but states that responsibility for the attack had not been confirmed. Also in the Greek press, Kathimerini, Ta Nea, and other sources in the report follow the fires, the missing persons, and the risks to maritime transport. In the Netherlands, the specialized publication Schuttevaer covers the fire aboard the “Yara J” and the investigation into a possible drone collision.
The dimension of the relationship with Spain appears concretely in Europa Press, which records the activation of two Spanish F-18 aircraft from Mihail Kogălniceanu as part of NATO’s air-policing mission. Separately, Turkey’s TRT World reports on the scrambling of two Romanian F-16s and the deployment of a helicopter after drones were detected near the border with Ukraine; for the episode described, the Romanian ministry stated that they had not crossed national airspace.
The Kimberly Guilfoyle case: Romania invoked in the European controversy over American influence
Romania appears in the European press in the context of controversies surrounding Kimberly Guilfoyle, the United States ambassador to Greece. The subject is covered by publications from Greece, Italy, Spain, Germany, and Austria, although not all reports give equal importance to the Romanian component. For this analysis, the central element is the statements attributed to the diplomat concerning alleged American influence over the fall of the government in Bucharest and the possibility of exerting similar pressure in other states.
In Greece, Proto Thema, To Pontiki, Ethnos, Naftemporiki, and other publications in the report follow allegations concerning the ambassador’s conduct, her relations with businesspeople, and the promotion of energy interests. Proto Thema and To Pontiki, based on Wall Street Journal reports, present a discussion in which Guilfoyle allegedly suggested that the United States could influence changes of government. Romania was allegedly invoked as a precedent, and the statement was interpreted as an indirect threat against Greece, in the presence of Greek Energy Minister Stavros Papastavrou.
According to Proto Thema and To Pontiki, Papastavrou stated in parliament that there had been no question of pressure or threats against his country and that such interventions would not be tolerated. The publications also record the ambassador’s defense, including statements conveyed through her lawyers concerning compliance with the rules applicable to diplomatic activity.
Ethnos adds the regional perspective by presenting interpretations from the Turkish press regarding the controversy and energy interests. Some explanations concerning alleged rivalries between gas supply routes are presented in the article itself as theories or behind-the-scenes interpretations. They cannot be transformed into certain explanations for political developments in Romania.
In Italy, Il Post explicitly addresses the Romanian component in an October 9 article about the Trump administration’s attempts to influence European governments. The publication discusses Guilfoyle’s meetings with Romanian politicians and the alleged connection between these contacts and the government crisis in Bucharest.
Il Post nevertheless maintains the distinction between the sequence of meetings and demonstrating a causal relationship. The article records that the Romanian politicians involved and the American administration denied the ambassador’s intervention in Romanian politics. At the same time, it specifies that the extent of any influence remains unclear.
