The exclusion of Călin Georgescu from the Romanian presidential race, by the decisions of the BEC and the Constitutional Court, has led to a reconfiguration of the debate on the presidential elections, focusing the discussions around other candidates and potential candidates. The new direction of the debate was also reflected in the online environment, where AUR topped the party visibility charts. An important part of the discussions about the presidential elections focused on the strategy of AUR and POT to initially propose two candidates as an alternative to Călin Georgescu.

According to data analyzed using NewsVibe, an AI-powered media intelligence platform, AUR approached the 2,200 online mentions level, registering an 18% increase compared to the previous week. The highest rate of increase was recorded by SOS Romania, which, although remaining in last place in the top, had over 200% more mentions than in the previous analysis, reflecting the BEC's decision to maintain the ban on Diana Șoșoaca's candidacy.

An increase, albeit less significant, was also observed in the case of USR, in the context of the discussions about a possible withdrawal of Elena Lasconi in favor of Nicușor Dan.

In contrast, the number of mentions for the PNL and PSD has seen a drop in the last seven days, the most notable being for the Liberals, where a decline of almost 25% was recorded.

Top 5 parties by online visibility

  1. Alianța pentru Unirea Românilor- 2,167 mentions
  2. Social Democratic Party - 1,560 mentions
  3. National Liberal Party - 1,464 mentions
  4. Save Romania Union - 1,402 mentions
  5. SOS Romania - 697 mentions

Note - only mentions from relevant online and social media sources (sources validated by the NewsVibe platform)

VOLVOLUME OF MENTIONS From the perspective of the comparative evolution of the volume of mentions, it is worth noting that, during most of the analyzed interval, AUR registered more mentions than the other political parties on a daily basis.

The peak of mentions for this party was recorded on the day of George Simion's candidacy for the presidential elections. In the case of USR, the highest number of mentions was reached on the day Elena Lasconi officially filed her candidacy.

For SOS Romania, the most important peaks of mentions coincided with the BEC's decision to ban Diana Șoșoaca's candidacy and with the Constitutional Court's judgment on the appeal filed by the party's president against this decision.

In the case of PSD and PNL, there was a joint peak in mentions on March 18, influenced by the actions and campaign messages of coalition candidate Crin Antonescu and the dispute between PNL and Victor Ponta, after the latter accused the Liberals of pressuring him to remove him from the chairmanship of a parliamentary committee.

ComPARTIVE COMPARISON. The competitive analysis engine created by NewsVibe evaluates the strength of these political actors to penetrate the online space, directly compared to their competitors.

This week confirms the trend recorded in the previous analysis, when AUR, along with PSD and PNL, also moved among the parties for which the estimated share of impact of mentions is lower than the actual proportion of such mentions in the total.

This phenomenon is more pronounced in the case of PSD and PNL: although mentions of PSD account for 21% of the total and those of PNL 20%, their estimated impact is 19% and 18% of the total respectively.

On the other hand, although mentions of SOS Romania account for only 10% of the total, they generate an estimated impact of 13%, while those of USR, which account for 19% of the total, bring 21% of the views.

IMPACT. At the level of impact, defined as the estimate of the total audience reached by the mentions of the political actors analyzed, the peaks largely coincide with those related to the number of mentions.

Thus, for AUR, the peak with the highest estimated impact of mentions was recorded on the day of George Simion's candidacy, and for USR, on the day of Elena Lasconi's candidacy.

For PSD and PNL, the highest impact was reached on March 18, as the coalition candidate's campaign messages intensified.

In the case of SOS Romania, the peaks of mentions were on the days of the BEC decision to ban Diana Șoșoaca's candidacy and the judgment of the appeal she filed with the CCR. Although most mentions of SOS Romania were recorded on the day of the BEC decision, the highest estimated impact was on the day the CCR judged the appeal.

ACCELERATION TRENDS The most significant jumps in online visibility, identified by NewsVibe's own algorithm, were registered in the case of SOS Romania, in two key moments: the day Diana Șoșoacă filed her candidacy for the Romanian presidency and the day this candidacy was rejected by the Central Electoral Bureau.

Notable accelerations were also observed for AUR, on the day George Simion filed his candidacy, as well as for PSD and PNL on March 18, in the context of the events mentioned above. The USR also registered an increase on the day of Elena Lasconi's candidacy.
