The European Union has decided to limit the flow of confidential information to Hungary, and leaders are meeting in smaller groups, in the context of suspicions that Viktor Orbán's government is sharing information with Russia, writes Politico.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk warned about these connections, emphasizing that details about EU Council meetings could reach the Kremlin, in response to an article in the Washington Post. According to the report, the person directly involved in these information leaks would be Hungary's Foreign Minister, Peter Szijjarto.
Although the accusations are serious, no official reaction from the EU is expected before the elections in Hungary on April 12, to avoid influencing the electoral process.
Former Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis confirmed that Hungary has been excluded from sensitive discussions, and concerns persist regarding the transmission of information to Moscow.
In this context, discussions are underway about smaller meeting formats among EU member states to protect sensitive information. Orbán, currently in an electoral campaign, has rejected the accusations, and a diplomat emphasized that Hungary continues to undermine European security.
