Berlin reacted to the accusations of U.S. Vice President JD Vance, who claimed that the European Union is interfering in the elections in Hungary. The deputy spokesperson for the German government, Sebastian Hille, stated that Vance's visit to Budapest, a few days before the Sunday vote, suggests that he might be guilty of interference, considering his support for the populist-nationalist government led by Viktor Orbán.

Vance criticized the bureaucrats in Brussels for their influence over the Hungarian people, but was immediately challenged by the leader of the Hungarian opposition, Péter Magyar, who stated that no foreign country has the right to interfere in the elections in Hungary. Additionally, the spokesperson for the German government emphasized that Chancellor Friedrich Merz has no preference regarding the outcome of the vote and will respect the decision of the Hungarian people. This situation highlights the tensions between the U.S. and the EU in the context of the elections in Hungary.
