Metin Hakverdi, the German government’s transatlantic coordinator, estimates that Republicans losing control of both chambers of Congress would significantly alter the political balance in Washington. He made the statement to the DPA news agency on Wednesday, following elections described by the German official as historic.
“America has chosen change,” said Hakverdi, a Social Democratic lawmaker, emphasizing that the election result shows how quickly the balance of power can shift, including in states considered Republican strongholds.
However, the German official warned that President Donald Trump will retain significant constitutional powers, particularly in the field of foreign policy. In this context, he called on the government in Berlin to maintain close relations with both American parties and with as broad a range as possible of organizations and groups in U.S. society.
Hakverdi also advocated strengthening Germany’s defense capabilities and economic competitiveness. “We must not make our security and economic success dependent on the results of elections in the United States,” he said.
The lawmaker also highlighted the election of the first Indigenous woman as governor of New Mexico, as well as the first Black woman as governor of Georgia.
