U.S. Vice President JD Vance has declined to follow President Donald Trump’s example and publicly endorse Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Israel’s parliamentary elections, scheduled for next week. He made the statement on Monday in an interview with Mark Halperin for “2WAY Tonight,” broadcast on the American platform 2WAY.
Vance said he was not criticizing Netanyahu, but neither was he expressing his support for him. He explained his decision by saying that he preferred to focus on American candidates and the midterm elections in the United States.
“I’m not against endorsing him. I’m not in favor of endorsing him. I’m simply not getting involved in Israel’s elections,” the U.S. vice president said.
Vance’s position contrasts with that of Donald Trump, who announced his support for Netanyahu on Sunday. The Israeli prime minister is seeking an advantage in a close electoral race, and the U.S. president’s backing is considered important ahead of the imminent vote. Vance stressed, however, that his attention is focused on domestic American politics and the midterm elections.
