A new legislative project proposes the introduction of a 'repairability index' for electrical and electronic appliances, which will inform consumers about the ease with which they can repair a device. USR Deputy Pollyanna Hangan emphasizes that this index will promote more durable products and help protect the environment by reducing electronic waste. The project transposes the European Directive 2024/1799 into Romanian legislation, aiming to increase the repair rate of electrical products to at least 60% by 2030. Initially, the index will apply to pilot categories, such as washing machines, televisions, and refrigerators, and will be calculated based on five main criteria. This measure will hold manufacturers accountable and encourage the development of products that are easier to repair, thus contributing to a cleaner environment. The proposal was developed in collaboration with various organizations and public authorities.
