On the night from Tuesday to Wednesday, an earthquake with a magnitude of 3.1 occurred in the Vrancea area at 2:09 AM, at a depth of 136 kilometers. The tremor was felt near the cities of Focșani, Buzău, Sfântu Gheorghe, Brașov, and Ploiești. Gheorghe Mărmureanu, a well-known seismologist, stated that a future major earthquake in Romania could have a magnitude between 7.2 and 8 and could occur after 2040. He emphasizes that this earthquake will be deep, similar to the one in 1802, which could reduce the impact on the population. Mărmureanu claims that the depth of the earthquake will allow the energy to disperse over a wide area, from Moscow to Cairo. The history of earthquakes in Romania includes devastating quakes, such as the one in 1940, with a magnitude of 7.7, which caused thousands of casualties. The author recommends a technical assessment for buildings in preparation for a major earthquake.
