Romanian Waters warns: Danube could fall to 1,300 m³/s on September 14

The Danube is experiencing a difficult hydrological period, with extremely low flows, the National Administration “Romanian Waters” warns. On Tuesday morning, the river’s flow at the country’s entrance, at the Baziaș section, reached 1,400 m³/s, compared with the multi-year average of 3,800 m³/s for September.

According to the diagnosis issued by the National Institute of Hydrology and Water Management, the flow could continue to decline, reaching approximately 1,300 m³/s on September 14. Specialists are continuously monitoring the river’s development, and the downward trend has also been observed downstream of the Iron Gates, at Gruia and Calafat.

The reduced flows are already affecting navigation by lowering water depth, leading to restrictions and requiring vessels to reduce their cargo. The situation is also placing pressure on the energy sector, including hydropower production, as well as on agriculture, irrigation and the water supply of riverside communities.

“Romanian Waters” warns that a flow far below the usual average represents a major hydrological deficit, whose effects may extend beyond the riverbed itself.>>
