A recent report published by France Universités highlights alarming regressions in academic freedom worldwide, with Romania among the EU countries with below-average levels. The document, signed by Stéphanie Balme, emphasizes that these violations are the result of the influence of authoritarian regimes and populist movements. In the European Union, new countries, including Romania, face issues in this area, requiring special vigilance.

The report mentions cases from Poland, where researchers have been prosecuted for studies related to the Holocaust, and emphasizes that academic freedom in France is lagging behind, in contrast to other fundamental freedoms. Criticism of "wokism" in universities contributes to the weakening of this freedom. France Universités recommends reaffirming academic freedom as a fundamental principle and promoting a common culture of it.
