The President of the Competition Council, Bogdan Chirițoiu, stated that the investigation regarding the establishment of ROBOR does not focus on regulations, but on the behavior of banks. Although the report has generated debates, there is no final decision, with the hearing of the banks being the next step.

Chirițoiu emphasized the importance of the independence of the quotations for the relevance of the ROBOR indicator, which is essential for the Romanian economy. If fines are imposed, they will be substantial, considering the size of the companies involved.

In this context, USR deputy Alexandru Dimitriu accused banks of anti-competitive practices and announced a draft law for recovering damages.

The Governor of the National Bank of Romania (BNR), Mugur Isărescu, highlighted the confusions in public discourse regarding the role of banks and explained that ROBOR is an index of the interbank market, essential for transmitting monetary policy. Additionally, the National Trade Union Bloc (BNS) reacted to the statements of the BNR governor, considering them an attempt to intimidate an independent institution that investigates possible collusions between banks to artificially maintain interest rates.
