Bogdan Chirițoiu, the president of the Competition Council, proposed that local pork suppliers organize into associations or cooperatives to have better access to large commercial chains.
Currently, the Council is analyzing the pork meat marketing market to identify dysfunctions that affect competition. Better collective organization would allow small producers to correlate their production capacities and ensure constant volumes of goods, thus increasing their negotiating power.
Chirițoiu emphasized that retailers could be more flexible in their relationship with local producers through regional contracts, thus contributing to supporting the local economy. He also mentioned that domestic production covers only 45% of Romania's consumption, with the rest being imports.
The Competition Council has initiated a study to identify barriers that limit Romanian farmers' access to the pork market, considering the critical situation of producers due to falling prices and rising production costs.
