US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that he had a “great conversation” with Russian leader Vladimir Putin, who wants to reach an agreement to end the war in Ukraine. The statement was made before Trump left for Dallas, where he was scheduled to attend the Republican National Convention.
Trump stated that an agreement could be reached if Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is also willing to accept a deal.
“He wants to reach a deal, and if Zelensky wants to make an agreement, that would be very good,” the US president told reporters.
The statement comes after a series of diplomatic contacts between Washington, Moscow, and Kyiv. Trump’s envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, met on Saturday with Vladimir Putin in Moscow, and on Sunday they held discussions in Kyiv with Volodymyr Zelensky.
Steve Witkoff said that both Russia and Ukraine must make compromises in order to identify a solution to the conflict. Jared Kushner, in turn, emphasized that Trump is determined to end the war and the loss of human lives. The conversations have not, so far, led to the announcement of a concrete agreement or a timetable for negotiations.
