Donald Trump promises to end the war in Ukraine after meeting Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the UN General Assembly

U.S. President Donald Trump met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in New York on Tuesday afternoon, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, to discuss ending the war between Russia and Ukraine.

Before the meeting, Trump said the war would end “sooner than people think” and claimed that he and Zelenskyy were working on a solution. The U.S. leader also said that Vladimir Putin wants a meeting to end the conflict, without providing details about any potential agreement. Trump said the talks would also address the provision of Patriot interceptor missiles to Ukraine.

The meeting comes amid renewed efforts by Washington to mediate a ceasefire, after negotiations reached an impasse over Moscow’s territorial demands. According to international media reports, Trump intends to pressure Zelenskyy to accept an energy ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine.

Kyiv is calling for an end to attacks on the energy sector, critical infrastructure and food exports. Russia and Ukraine have nevertheless continued to strike energy facilities and refineries, while Moscow has made a resolution of the issues conditional on the lifting of sanctions and guarantees for the safety of oil shipments.
