Nicușor Dan appointed an ambassador of Romania to Haiti / This is the first decree accrediting an ambassador abroad since he became president

President Nicușor Dan appointed Theodora-Magdalena Mircea ambassador of Romania to Haiti on Wednesday, according to a statement from the Presidential Administration. Mircea already serves as Romania’s ambassador to Cuba and will also represent Bucharest in Haiti.

The appointment comes as dozens of diplomatic posts remain blocked. The president has not yet signed the decrees to replace more than 50 ambassadors who have exceeded their terms, according to information published by Libertatea.

A relevant case is Romania’s Embassy in Spain, where the ambassadorial post has been vacant since January 2024. Spain is a traditional ally of Romania and has sent fighter jets to protect Romanian airspace amid incidents caused by Russian drones.

Nicușor Dan explained that he had not made the diplomatic appointments because he had to manage the political crisis. He cited the same reason for the appointment of the heads of the intelligence services.
