President Nicușor Dan appointed diplomat Luca Niculescu as prime minister on Monday, following consultations with the parliamentary parties, explaining that he had chosen the person who has “the best chance of securing a majority.” The head of state emphasized that Niculescu has the necessary experience to reconcile political positions and is familiar with the Romanian administration, having overseen Romania’s OECD accession process over the past four years.
Nicușor Dan stated that Romania urgently needs a government, both to revise the budget and prepare next year’s budget, and to reduce the uncertainty affecting the economy, the exchange rate, interest rates, and investments. The president added that he has assurances that a government led by Luca Niculescu will maintain Romania’s pro-Western direction and respect the financial targets and commitments undertaken by our country.
