Prime Minister Luca Niculescu stated on Tuesday evening, at the end of the first government meeting, that President Nicușor Dan had given him full freedom to choose the political formula for forming the new Government. The mandate was granted after three failed attempts to form the Executive and approximately six months of political crisis.
Niculescu explained that the president had given him the option of choosing a political, mixed, or technocratic government. The prime minister said that the main objective was to unblock the administration and ensure the functioning of state institutions, not his political or personal preferences.
The new Executive is a minority government, made up of members of the Social Democratic Party. According to the prime minister, other political formations were also invited to participate in government, but they decided not to join the Cabinet. Some of the parties that refused to participate nevertheless supported the Government’s investiture in Parliament.
Niculescu thanked the formations that voted for the Executive, stating that the support received from the Legislature allows Romania to have, after a prolonged period of deadlock, a Government with full powers. The prime minister emphasized that the responsibility assumed by the PSD is aimed at ensuring the functioning of the administration.
