President Nicusor Dan inaugurated the “Queen Marie of Romania Corner” in New York during his official visit on the occasion of the United Nations General Assembly’s High-Level Week. The event marks 100 years since Queen Marie’s historic visit to the United States and once again highlights the sovereign’s role in promoting Romania’s image across the Atlantic.
In 1926, Queen Marie’s tour of the United States attracted considerable interest from the American press and became one of the most important moments of Romania’s interwar public diplomacy. A century later, the sovereign’s name is being honored once again in New York through a space dedicated to her memory and contributions.
Asked what inspires him from Queen Marie’s biography, Nicusor Dan said that she devoted herself to serving the nation whose sovereign she was and that, from this perspective, she represents a role model. The president emphasized the importance of promoting such historical figures, as well as people dedicated to society today, in defining a healthy hierarchy of values.
