The National Salt Company - Salrom requested, on Friday, from the European Commission, funding of 250 million euros for a modern processing project of graphite tailings in Baia de Fier, Gorj. The project includes the establishment of an integrated unit that will transform graphite concentrate into anode products compliant with lithium-ion industry standards, using advanced technologies such as micronization, spheroidization, and purification. This initiative will place Baia de Fier on the strategic map of materials for the EU's energy transition, contributing to supply security and adhering to ESG standards.
Salrom will hire approximately 300 specialists for the operation of the new equipment. Additionally, the company is working on a project for recycling graphite from battery waste, aiming to reduce the carbon footprint. Salrom already has an approved project for the extraction and processing of graphite tailings, with funding of 198 million euros, intended for the production of high-purity graphite for batteries, essential in the electric vehicle industry.
