Romania's budget deficit decreased from 6.2% of GDP in the first 10 months of 2024 to 5.7% in the same period of 2025, according to Finance Minister Alexandru Nazare. This improvement was appreciated by the European Commission, which suspended the excessive deficit procedure for EU member states. However, in absolute terms, the budget deficit remained constant at 109 billion lei in both analyzed periods. This discrepancy is explained by the increase in GDP, which rose from 1,759 billion lei in 2024 to 1,902 billion lei in 2025. Thus, although the percentage of the deficit has decreased, the debt generated by it continues to be paid from taxpayers' money. Economic growth is essential for reducing the deficit as a share of GDP, but it remains to be seen how this will affect long-term financial sustainability.

Mirajul cifrelor.
