ANAF inspects 180 currency exchange offices as part of Operation FOCUS

The General Directorate for Tax Fraud Prevention (DGAF) has launched Operation F.O.C.U.S. – Taxation of Operations and Compliance of Exchange Units, a nationwide action to inspect 180 currency exchange offices across the country and in Bucharest. The inspections are taking place simultaneously and aim to verify compliance with tax and financial-accounting obligations.

Inspectors are primarily checking whether currency exchange operations are properly recorded for tax purposes, whether electronic cash registers are being used correctly, and whether completed transactions correspond to those recorded in tax and accounting records. Reporting and payment obligations are also being analyzed, along with compliance with the applicable legal provisions.

The operation represents the nationwide expansion of a pilot project recently conducted in this sector. According to ANAF, the pilot inspections indicated a high level of tax non-compliance and highlighted the main risks and types of irregularities encountered among economic operators.

Through this action, DGAF seeks to increase tax compliance, prevent reductions in budget revenues, and protect fair competition. If violations are identified, inspectors will impose the measures provided by law, depending on the nature and severity of the facts. The final results will be announced after the inspections are completed and the data is consolidated at national level.
