Romania is becoming an increasingly attractive destination for foreign tourists, with spending rising by over 8% in the first quarter of 2026 compared to the same period in 2025, according to Colliers data. This positive trend continues an average annual growth of 12% over the last decade, the fastest rate in the European Union. Tourists from the United States, Germany, the United Kingdom, and Italy generated nearly 40% of total spending, with Americans leading the way, spending 554 million euros. Romania is perceived as an accessible and less crowded destination, and the growth of leisure tourism contributes to this trend. Although Romania has seen faster growth than Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, or Poland, it remains a smaller destination in absolute value. Changes in the profile of tourists show an increased contribution from American tourists and the emergence of Japan as a source market. Romania could add over 5,000 hotel rooms by 2030, mostly in the premium segment, attracting international brands. Investments in infrastructure and international promotion are essential to transform Romania into a competitive destination in Central and Eastern Europe.
