Rheinmetall and the Swiss company MSC have won the tender to take over the Mangalia shipyard for approximately 138 million euros. The transaction is expected to be completed in the coming weeks, and the price will be paid jointly by the two companies.
Rheinmetall announces that it will expand and modernize the site, with the aim of transforming the shipyard into a dual-use production facility. Civilian and military vessels will be built in parallel at Mangalia for the domestic market and international customers. Activities will be organized into separate sectors and security zones.
The shipyard will participate in the construction of four military vessels ordered by Romania: two 96-meter maritime patrol vessels and two 43-meter support vessels for divers. The contract is worth approximately 920 million euros and is financed through the European SAFE program.
The sale price is approximately 46 million euros below the market value initially established. Damen Mangalia entered bankruptcy on April 28, and the sale of the assets was decided on May 26, 2026. More than 1,000 employees were laid off.
