DP World has begun electrifying the Constanța Container Terminal through a €53.8 million investment co-financed by the European Union. The project, which will be implemented by August 31, 2028, represents the first stage of a program designed to reduce emissions and support the decarbonization of maritime transport in the Port of Constanța.
The funding includes a European grant of up to €19.7 million, a loan of up to €25 million provided by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, and the operator Constanța South Container Terminal’s own contribution.
The investment provides for the electrification of 29 container blocks, the installation of approximately six kilometers of busbars for future electric cranes, and the construction of a hub with 10 charging points for electric tractors. DP World will also purchase 10 such tractors.
The terminal will have two shore-side power supply systems powered by renewable sources. This will allow berthed vessels to switch off their auxiliary engines and connect to the electricity grid.
The program will continue with a second investment worth €46.2 million for additional electric cranes and tractors. The terminal’s total electrification investment will reach €100 million.
