Bucharest will receive €87.44 million in non-repayable funding from the Modernization Fund to renew and modernize its public transport fleet. The investment was confirmed by the European Investment Bank as a priority project for the capital, Mayor General Ciprian Ciucu announced on Wednesday.
The funds will enable the purchase of 10 new trams to replace V3A(M) trams, 45 trolleybuses to replace Astra Ikarus vehicles, and 40 electric buses. Of these, 20 will be 12 meters long, while the other 20 will be 10 meters long and will replace Mercedes-Benz Citaro Euro 3 diesel buses.
According to the mayor general, the funds are non-repayable, and the municipality will cover only VAT. The investment aims to modernize the fleet of the Bucharest Transport Company, improve service quality, and reduce pollution in the capital.
The next stage is to develop the infrastructure needed to charge the electric buses so that they can be put into operation immediately after purchase. The project was carried out with the support of representatives of STB, the Ministry of Transport, and the local administration.
