Amazon intends to announce next week a new wave of layoffs, part of a plan to reduce 30,000 positions globally, according to sources cited by Reuters. The company has already eliminated 14,000 administrative positions in October, and the new wave of layoffs could begin on Tuesday, affecting divisions such as Amazon Web Services, retail, Prime Video, and human resources. If fully implemented, this reduction would represent nearly 10% of Amazon's corporate workforce, which numbers 1.58 million employees.
This would become the largest round of layoffs in the company's 30-year history, surpassing the restructuring of 27,000 jobs in 2022. Although Amazon previously mentioned that layoffs are influenced by the rise of artificial intelligence, CEO Andy Jassy emphasized that the reasons are more related to organizational culture and bureaucracy. Employees affected by layoffs will benefit from a 90-day period on the payroll to seek new jobs.
