France apologized to the United States for a critical message on human rights published on July 25, 2026, by the French mission to the United Nations in Geneva. The statement prompted a strong reaction from Washington and delayed the arrival of the French ambassador to the United States.
France’s mission said it “regrets” the post on the X platform, which criticized the U.S. decision to vote, alongside Russia and North Korea, against extending the mandate of UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk. The U.S. delegation subsequently left the room during the speech by the French representative at a meeting of the UN Human Rights Council.
In the statement published in Geneva, the French side said the disagreement concerned a single vote and did not represent a challenge to the United States’ commitment to defending human rights. The French Foreign Ministry offered no further comment.
The U.S. State Department said it took note of and appreciated the message, expressing its willingness to work with France to promote shared values and interests. The dispute emerged as Washington was considering blocking the appointment of Aurélien Lechevallier, the diplomat nominated by Paris for the post of ambassador to the United States. The apology could clear the way for approval of the appointment.
