U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio called on the Iranian delegation, led by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, to leave New York on Monday after negotiations between Washington and Tehran reached an impasse. The information was reported by Axios, citing a U.S. official and a source familiar with the situation.
The U.S. Mission to the United Nations reportedly informed Iranian representatives on Monday evening that the delegation had to leave immediately. According to the U.S. official cited, the U.N. General Assembly had concluded, and the Iranian delegation had exceeded its permitted stay.
Araghchi and members of the delegation left for the airport several hours later and arrived in Doha on Tuesday morning. Another source, however, said that the minister’s departure had already been scheduled for Monday night.
The move was interpreted as an unusual diplomatic rebuke and highlighted the deep mistrust between the two countries. The White House had initially anticipated progress in Monday’s talks, but the negotiations subsequently reached a deadlock. Mediators from Qatar continue discussions with both sides on a compromise proposal.
