The United States expelled two members of the Iranian delegation who attended the recent UN General Assembly after they remained in New York despite the State Department's order to leave the country. The decision was announced by US authorities on Saturday, amid tensions between Washington and Tehran.
A US official quoted by AFP said that the two delegation members were identified in New York long after the General Assembly had ended and were expelled from the United States. The official said that Secretary of State Marco Rubio “is not joking” about compliance with the order.
According to the US press, the State Department had asked Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and his delegation to leave the country on Monday. Subsequently, US authorities learned from the Iranian mission to the UN that two delegation members were still in the United States.
According to Axios, one of them left on Friday evening, and the other on Saturday morning, following pressure from Washington. Meanwhile, Donald Trump rejected Tehran's proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, but said he expected talks to resume.
The official Iranian news agency IRNA reported that Iran no longer has direct negotiations with the US scheduled.
