The League proposed in Parliament a bill aimed at amending the legislation regarding Italian citizenship, especially for young people born and raised in Italy. The project provides for a mandatory "integration" exam for adults born to foreign parents, assessing knowledge of social and legal norms. Additionally, stricter requirements related to criminal records are introduced, and the necessary residency periods for obtaining citizenship are extended.
Thus, the minimum residency period for foreign-born individuals in Italy would increase from three to ten years, and for the children of Italian citizens, from two to four years. The project also includes new grounds for revocation of citizenship, such as convictions for violent crimes. The League justifies the initiative as a reaction to the rejection of the referendum in June, which proposed reducing the necessary residency period. The project has not yet been analyzed by the competent parliamentary committee.
