Deputy Iulian Lorincz and Senator Cătălin Bochileanu, members of USR, have initiated a legislative project that amends the Citizenship Law, granting foreign citizens married to Romanians the right to apply for Romanian citizenship, even if they do not reside in Romania. The project stipulates that individuals married to Romanian citizens and living abroad can apply for citizenship, provided that the marriage has been registered in the Romanian civil status records for at least 10 years.

Currently, the law imposes a long period of residence in Romania, ignoring the situation of spouses living outside the country. Lorincz emphasizes that Romania must support its citizens, regardless of where they live, while Bochileanu mentions that the initiative does not relax the conditions for granting citizenship but eliminates an outdated requirement. The project has the support of a parliamentary majority and corrects the observations of the Constitutional Court that led to the rejection of a similar initiative in 2022.
