Soraya Martinez Ferrada, leader of the Ensemble Montréal party, has been elected as the next mayor of the city of Montreal, thus becoming the first person belonging to an ethnic minority to hold this position. Born in Chile, Martinez Ferrada fled the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet and settled in Montreal at the age of eight. She is the second woman to become mayor of the city, after Valérie Plante.
