A 37-year-old Romanian and a 54-year-old Greek have been arrested in Germany on suspicion of attempted sabotage against German military ships in the port of Hamburg. The two are accused of trying to cause damage to corvettes intended for the German Navy last year by manipulating technical systems at a shipyard.
According to prosecutors, they allegedly introduced 20 kilograms of 'sandblasting grit' into the engine of a ship, perforating the fresh water supply pipes and disabling safety switches. These actions were discovered in time, preventing serious damage to the vessels.
Authorities conducted searches in the suspects' apartments in Hamburg, Romania, and Greece, and the operation was coordinated by the European Union Agency for Criminal Justice Cooperation. The details of the motive behind these actions have not yet been revealed.
