Wednesday, February 4, Vasile Frumuzache, a 33-year-old Romanian guard accused of killing two escorts in Italy, attempted to escape from Sollicciano prison. Using a rudimentary hook made of iron bars and bed sheets, he climbed the exercise yard wall and then the perimeter wall. The escape attempt was thwarted by a single guard on patrol, who spotted him and stopped him before he could succeed in leaving the prison.
Prison police unions praised the guard's quick intervention but expressed concern about the security gaps in the prison. The incident highlighted the operational difficulties at Sollicciano prison and the importance of the role of prison police in ensuring safety. Vasile Frumuzache admitted that he killed two compatriots, Ana Maria Andrei and Maria Denisa Paun, in 2024 and 2025.
