Romanian inmate escapes from a prison in Venice / Police search train stations and ports

Italian authorities have been searching for approximately 24 hours for Florin Baeram, a 33-year-old Romanian man who escaped from a prison in Venice. The man, accused of robbery and awaiting trial, took advantage of a moment when the guards were distracted and jumped over the prison fence.

The escape occurred during an operation to eradicate bedbugs. To allow the work to be carried out, inmates were moved one by one from one prison building to another. In this context, the Romanian national allegedly managed to leave the premises without being stopped.

Dozens of police officers are taking part in the search operations, with checks also targeting train stations and ports in the area. Authorities are trying to establish the fugitive’s route and prevent him from leaving the region.

Donato Capece, secretary-general of the SAPPE prison police union, described the incident as extremely serious. He argued that sanitation operations should not create security breaches in the prison and called for an investigation into how the transfer of inmates was organized. Florin Baeram has a criminal record for robberies and property-related offenses.
