In June 2024, the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) filed an environmental complaint regarding the planned hydraulic works on the Bala branch of the Danube, which aim to restore and renaturalize the area to ensure navigation conditions and environmental protection. The European Commission confirmed that the complaint is open and that progress is expected in addressing the expressed concerns.
The project, funded by external sources and the state budget, aims to develop maritime transport and protect the environment, but WWF contests its compliance with EU environmental legislation.
In a press conference in August 2026, PSD leader Sorin Grindeanu accused environmental organizations of blocking the project, emphasizing that the necessary works have not been carried out due to their interventions. Grindeanu criticized the Ministry of Transport for the delay of the project, while the Minister of Environment accused NGOs of irresponsibility.
