The Ministry of Defense in Sofia announced that the drone which exploded on Saturday morning near the locality of Kardam, at the border with Romania, is most likely of Ukrainian origin and was a "Maya" decoy drone used by the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

The incident occurred at 8:10 AM, and the drone fell into a sunflower field without causing damage. Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev emphasized that the crash site is close to critical energy infrastructures. The drone was not detected by Romanian or Bulgarian air defense systems due to the low altitude at which it was flying. The Romanian National Defense Ministry confirmed that no drone was recorded crossing Romanian airspace towards Bulgaria before the explosion. Decoy drones serve the role of exhausting the enemy's air defense.
