The University of Iași takes measures after the arrest of Alexandru Toader

“Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University of Iași announced on Monday, October 26, several measures following the pretrial detention of university lecturer Ionuț-Alexandru Toader, who is under investigation in a case in which he is accused of rape and sexual assault. The decisions were unanimously adopted by the Faculty of Law Council and aim to protect students and ensure the continuation of teaching activities.

The lecturer’s employment contract is suspended by operation of law, and he will no longer carry out teaching activities until the criminal case is resolved, regardless of any potential changes to the preventive measure ordered by the court. The courses and other activities he taught will be taken over by other professors.

The measures also concern former Justice Minister Tudorel Toader and lecturer Olga-Andreea Urda, who will no longer teach or assess students in the undergraduate and master’s programs organized in Iași, in both full-time and part-time forms of study. The changes will be made by amending the contracts, in compliance with the law and university regulations.

UAIC will organize meetings with students and offer them confidential psychological counseling, as well as support to those who wish to resume their studies or reenroll. The university encourages the reporting of possible abuses to [email protected] and announces an evaluation of its internal procedures regarding harassment and abuse. Given the criminal case, the accusations are to be established by the court.
